This is something that I’ve seriously been thinking about. I was watching a documentary (Human Planet) and there was a segment about a New Guinean tribe who live in complete communal nudity and build houses up in trees only accessible by tall ladders. Something I found funny is that they make the men climb the ladder first, followed by the women so that the men don’t look up and glimpse an overly intimate view of the woman above them. I found this funny because, despite an acceptance of nudity, they still had rules dictating modesty (maybe a couple of men fell from being distracted). I began to think about this in relation to Western nudists and whether we have similar unwritten rules to prevent certain body parts being openly exposed to the opposite sex (assuming our heteronormativite culture) and aside from common sense modesty I don’t think we do, in fact we, in some ways celebrate activities where these lines are overtly crossed.
